Outdoor School
Our Oregon Department of Education (ODE) outdoor programs are designed to support K-12 students in learning about the natural environment, ecosystems, cultural heritage, and sustainability practices through hands-on, experiential learning, especially in the areas that surround them in a way that aligns with state and national standards. Our programs integrate science, environmental literacy, cultural history, social-emotional learning, and outdoor skills to foster a connection with nature, promote stewardship and conservation, and enhance understanding of our diverse ecosystems.
Wilderness Education
Our wilderness education program provides a foundation in essential skills for outdoor exploration, ecological knowledge, survival, and conservation. Participants learn navigation with maps, compasses, and GPS, shelter building, fire starting, foraging, and water purification, equipping them for self-reliance in the wild. Wilderness first aid and risk assessment are taught to handle emergencies, alongside Leave No Trace principles and environmental awareness to foster sustainable practices. The program also includes navigation, tracking, weather preparedness, and leadership skills for effective group dynamics. With courses on camping, hiking, and hunting ethics, participants gain the knowledge to explore and appreciate the natural world responsibly.
Farm & Ranch
Our farm and ranch education program teaches skills related to farming practices and essential farm management including agriculture, livestock management, sustainable practices, and rural business operations. Participants will learn techniques for crop production, soil health, greenhouse management, and animal husbandry, with a focus on organic and regenerative methods. The program also covers farm equipment operation, land stewardship, safety protocols, and business fundamentals, including marketing and financial management for our older participants.
Homesteading
Our homesteading education program provides training for participants looking to cultivate a self-sufficient, sustainable lifestyle. Covering topics from food production and preservation to sustainable building and emergency preparedness, participants gain essential skills for managing a homestead. The program teaches gardening, orchard care, livestock management, beekeeping, and dairy production, as well as food preservation methods like canning and fermenting. Practical skills in basic carpentry, off-grid energy, herbalism, and natural health support self-reliance, while courses in permaculture, wildlife support, and energy efficiency promote sustainable living. With a focus on resource conservation, DIY skills, and rural security, this program equips participants with resilient, resourceful homestead knowledge. Our programs blend traditional skills with modern sustainability and stewardship practices.
